4 Free Seminars on Preventive Health Care for Musicians

In the first of this 4-part series, Dr. Ken Waltzer will present an overview of issues challenging musicians – and how to address them. Dr. Waltzer holds a BA cum laude from Harvard College, an MD from Baylor College of Medicine, and an MPH in Health Policy and Management from the Harvard School of Public Health. His internship and residency in Primary Care Internal Medicine were at The Cambridge Hospital of Harvard Medical School. Dr. Waltzer was with Kaiser-Permanente, where he was the first Preventive Care Coordinator for Southern California. While at Kaiser, he was also Director of Medical Education at the West Los Angeles Medical Center and cared for one of the largest practices in Internal Medicine with nearly 2000 patients. Dr. Waltzer was specifically cited for his role in developing statewide guidelines for preventive care.

ORCHESTRATION II
(Advanced Orchestration)

Saturdays: July 24 — Sept. 11
1-4 p.m.
Local 47 Member Services Department presents two eight-week courses in the fine art of combining orchestral instruments.

Students will analyze selected excerpts from orchestral scores and compose sketches for various ensembles and orchestral configurations. The course will culminate with a recording by professionals of an original chamber work for seven players (string quintet, oboe and horn) written by the students (course fee to be collected by instructor).

Offered as a paired course with Orchestration I or individually.

Free to Local 47 members in good standing.

Taught by Dr. Norman Ludwin: instrumentalist, composer, arranger, publisher, and professional bassist who has played on hundreds of feature film and television scores.

9TH ANNUAL FALL CLASSIC GOLF TOURNAMENT

The Local 47 Musicians Foundation will host the 9th Annual Fall Classic Golf Tournament Fundraiser on Monday, Sept. 13, 2010 at Robinson Ranch in Santa Clarita, 27734 Sand Canyon Road, Santa Clarita, CA.

The Local 47 Musicians Foundation is a 501(c)3 organization that provides assistance to help cover daily living and household expenses when a professional musician is in financial distress and cannot work due to a sudden illness or injury. This is an opportunity for the entertainment industry and the entire community to support local artists. A generous donation of cash and/or prizes would be greatly appreciated. Your participation helps musicians and arts organizations in need and strengthens our endowment for assistance.

MUSIC NOTATION WITH 'FINALE'

Saturdays: Sept. 18 – Oct. 9, 2010

Local 47's Member Services Department presents a four-part introductory course into one of the standard tools of music preparation.

Free to Local 47 members in good standing. Space is limited. Call to reserve your spot today!

Overview: A four-seminar series taught by member Paul Young that will give a working musician a full introduction into computer based notation via Finale. Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to input music into Finale, transpose and edit the music as needed, format the score and parts, and hear a midi-mock up of their composition/ arrangement. The musician will also be comfortable importing their midi files into "Finale," and will understand how to make these files readable for the music stand.

• Attendees should have a working knowledge of music notation and computers (PC)

• The first 12 attendees who sign up will have a spot at one of the four computer workstations Local 47 supplies

• A limited number of attendees with their own laptops (with the "Finale" software installed) will be admitted as well
